WADDY WILLIAM MOORE III PAPERS
M98-04
Waddy William Moore III was born on January 29, 1928 in Helena, Arkansas to Waddy William Moore Jr., and Floretta Williams Moore. Waddy Moore Jr., was an official with the Interstate Grocery Company. The younger Moore graduated from Helena High School in 1946. After graduating from high school Waddy Moore III joined the United States Air Force and served from 1946-1949. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to his discharge in 1949. After his discharge from the Air Force he enrolled at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. In 1953 two important events transpired in Mr. Moores life, he was wedded to Gay Garrigan and received a Bachelor of Science in Education degrees (B.S.E.). After receiving his B.S.E. he immediately enrolled in the Master of Arts (M.A.) program at the University of Arkansas and received a Master of Arts degree in 1955. However, it should be noted he completed his classwork toward the M.A. degree in 1954.
In 1955 Moore enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he completed several courses toward his Ph.D. before joining the staff at Webb School, Bell Buckle, Tennessee. Moore served on the staff at Webb School, a boys prep school, from 1955-1957. A major impetus for Moore to temporarily put his Ph.D. work on hold and find a job, was the birth of their first daughter, Bonnie Gay Moore. Bonnie was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1955. The couples second daughter, Elizabeth Blanch Moore, would be born in 1959 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Upon leaving Webb School, Moore returned to Chapel Hill to complete his course work toward his Ph.D. He would finally receive his Ph.D. in 1963 after completing his dissertation on Territorial Arkansas, 1910-1936.
Moore completed his dissertation while serving as Assistant Professor of History at Northeast Louisiana State University in Monroe, Louisiana, where he taught from 1060-1965. Interestingly enough, while teaching at Northeast, he would have as a student Don Jones, a future long-time member of UCAs history department. Dr. Jones stated that Dr. Moore had a big-impact on his life in deciding to make a career of teaching history.
Dr. Moore joined the faculty at the University of Central Arkansas in 1965 as Associate Professor of History. He help eh rank of Associate Professor until 1970 when he was promoted to full-Professor of History. Dr. Moore continued serving as Professor of History until his retirement in 1993. In addition to being a Professor of History he is also the creator of the Oral History Office, the forerunner of the Ozark Heritage Institute, and was its director from 1968-1993. Dr. Moore was also instrumental in the creation of the UCA Archives.
The teaching of American and Arkansas history were Dr. Moores specialty along with teaching senior seminar courses which instructed students how to conduct research and write history. Dr. Moore is the past president of the Faulkner County Historical Society where he edited the societys quarterly, Faulkner Facts and Fiddlings, from 1970-1974. He is also past president of the Arkansas Historical Association, 1974-1976, and was elected to the Council of the Oral History Association and would serve as its President.
Books which were authored by Dr. Moore include: Arkansas, Land of Opportunity, an Arkansas in the gilded Age, 1874-1900. Dr. Moore collaborated with fellow UCA faculty member Dr. Glenn Smith in creating Scene a monthly KETS-TV program that discussed current events in the light of history. Among his most noteworthy articles is Oral History. which was published in History News in March, 1975.
Dr. Moore is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, Kappa Sigma, the Southern Historical Association, and America Association of State and Local History. In 1999 he was elected Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at UCA.
Dr. & Mrs. Moore make their home in Conway, Arkansas.
