The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was established in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. The purpose of the organization was to unite women in the fight against the sale of alcoholic beverages. Frances Willard was elected WCTU President in 1879, and she directed the organization into a wide variety of activities, including Woman’s Suffrage. By the Mid-1880’s the WCTU had over 200,000 members nationally.
The Arkansas branch of the WCTU was established in 1878. In 1899, the Arkansas WCTU named the Woman’s Chronicle, a Little Rock weekly, as its official organization. Eventually the Arkansas White Ribboner became the journal of the state WCTU.

· The Central Arkansas Library System in Little Rock donated this collection to the Torreyson Library Archives, as duplicates from their collection.
