Erwin Lawrence McDonald was born in London, Pope County, Arkansas on October 31, 1907 to Frank Floyd McDonald, a Baptist minister and farmer in nearby Bunker Hill, and Rebecca Geneva Powell-McDonald. He was the oldest of six children. He attended public school through the eighth grade in Lone Gum and London. When his father died in the flu epidemic of 1919, McDonald began teaching high school after completing the eighth grade. He graduated at the top of his class at Russellville High School in 1928. From 1928-1931, he was a schoolteacher and administrator in Conway County. In 1934, he received his Associate of Science Degree from Arkansas Polytechnic College (currently Arkansas Tech University), which was then a junior college.
He began his journalism career with the Russellville Daily Courier-Democrat as the London correspondent in the late 1920’s, becoming an official press correspondent in 1932 and being named city editor in 1937. First Baptist Church-Russellville, ordained him a minister in 1938. He continued his education at Ouachita Baptist University, graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude. He taught journalism and English there until 1944. While in Arkadelphia, McDonald edited a local newspaper, served as publicity director for the University, and pastured Washington Baptist church (currently First Baptist Church-Washington) near Hope, Arkansas.
He moved with his family to Louisville, Kentucky, to attend the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He graduated in 1947 with a Master of Divinity degree. Upon his graduation, he became Director of Public Relations for the Seminary and began editing The Tie, the Seminary’s magazine. He stayed in Louisville until 1951, at which time he moved to South Carolina to become the Director of Public Relations for Furman University; there he established The Furman University Magazine. He took the position of Executive Secretary for Christian Education for the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky in 1954. In this role, he coordinated work among the Baptist schools in Kentucky. In 1957, McDonald moved back to Arkansas to assume the editorship of the Arkansas Baptist Newsmagazine, the official publication of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. He was editor for 15 years.
He was also a prolific writer, being the author of half a dozen books and innumerable articles and editorials. Some of his books include: The Church Using the Newspaper, 1958; 75 Stories and Illustrations from Everyday Life, 1964; Across the Editor’s Desk, 1966; and he co-authored a book entitled A Look Down the Lonesome Road, 1964, which was concerned with race relations. Through this book and in his editorials for the Arkansas Baptist Newsmagazine, McDonald became known as a “liberal” on race relations. He consistently called for moderation from both sides in the tense days following the 1957 ‘Little Rock Crisis’; he exhorted Baptists to show toleration toward African-Americans, which brought a round of condemnations from white racists. He was the first journalist in the state to come out against the so-called State’s Rights Amendment to the State Constitution. Consequently, faced with censorship efforts by his supervisors, McDonald took early retirement in 1972. Following his retirement he served the Arkansas Democrat as religion editor until 1985.
In 1967, he was named board chairman of the Economic Opportunity Agency of Pulaski County. During 1968-1969, he served as its vice-chairman. He was a member of the National Conference on Christians and Jews (NCCJ). He was named a consultant to the Arkansas Region of the NCCJ in 1972, traveling the state to promote the organization’s cause. Beginning in 1973, he wrote a column for Arkansas newspapers called “Living Together on Spaceship Earth”. McDonald also has an interest in Arkansas and local history. He has written several papers on religion in early Arkansas; he was a member of the Pulaski County Historical Society and the Arkansas Historical Association.
McDonald married Mary Elise (Maria) Price McDonald in 1930 in London, Arkansas. They lived, since moving back to Arkansas, in the Park Hill area of North Little Rock and were members of Park Hill Baptist Church. After the death of his wife in 1993, McDonald has lived at Parkway Village, a Baptist retirement home in Little Rock. Together they had two daughters: Avis Jeannine, born October 19, 1931 and Judy Carole, born November 23, 1940. McDonald also has three grandchildren.

This collection was donated to the Torreyson Library Archives and measured approximately 35.7 cubic feet and consisted of materials from 1843-1995. This collection is arranged in 31 boxes and made up of five series:
