Pine Bluff Women’s Center Records

This collection contains the records of the Pine Bluff Women’s Center of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.  The organization was established in 1975, the purpose being to serve the needs of women in Jefferson County.

 

            Among the activities of the PBWC were programs to deal with rape and other violence against women, career development, education, assertiveness training, and racism.  Leaders of the organization, to an especial interest in seeking passage of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment in the mid 1970’s.

 

            The “Women of the Arkansas Delta” oral history project resulted in the publication in 1976 of a book by the same title.  The PBWC Records contain the oral history interview cassette recordings as well as the book itself.

 

            The Center dissolved itself in 1992 due to several of the organization’s members and leaders moving outside the county.  The collection was donated to the UCA Archives by Ms Becky Kilmer, a founder and leader of the group.
