Terry Humble Papers

Terry Humble was born at Mount Ida, Arkansas, on August 24, 1924, to T. A. Humble and Thelma Goodner Humble. T. A. Humble was an attorney, school administrator and Army officer. Thelma Goodner Humble was a schoolteacher. T. A. Humble was a widower with two children, Ruth and Roland, when he married Thelma Goodner. Geraldine was also born to his second marriage.
Terry Humble attended elementary schools at Mount Ida and Oden and graduated from Mount Ida High School in 1942. He attended Arkansas State Teachers College until Congress lowered the draft age to eighteen. He quit college and prepared to join the United States Marine Corps, which he did on January 6, 1943. He was assigned to the Commander of the South Pacific, Admiral William Halsey. He served in that Marine Detachment as a Marine Guard, including guarding Admiral Halsey, and as a member of Naval Intelligence. He saw duty on the island of New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Bougainvillea. He was rotated back to the United States and was discharged from the Naval Air station, Sanford, Florida, on October 27, 1945.
Terry Humble re-entered Arkansas State Teachers College in January 1946, married Norma Jo Lawrence in Conway and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and received a Master’s degree in 1949, from George Peabody College for Teachers. Terry Humble and Norma Jo Humble moved to Morrilton in 1951. She became a substitute teacher and housewife and he became the High School Principal. A daughter, Jo Beth, was born to them while they served in Morrilton. Terry Humble became involved in many professional changes in the Morrilton Schools during those years, including the Model School Program provided by Winthrop Rockefeller. The family moved to Hot Springs in 1959.
Jo Beth started school in Hot Springs; Norma Jo became an elementary teacher in the Hot Springs Schools while Terry was the High School Principal. Many professional improvements were involved in the schools and the personal growth of the Humble family members during their years in Hot Springs.
The family returned to Morrilton in 1963. That move would see Jo Beth graduate from Morrilton High School, Norma Jo became a remedial reading teacher and Terry became Superintendent. The Rockefeller Model School Program would be continued, many professional improvements implemented and the desegregation of the Morrilton Schools. The desegregation was successful for the students but involved school leaders in a ten –year federal court suit that would become a United States Supreme Court landmark case.
Norma Jo and Terry Humble moved to Harrison in 1975 where she became remedial reading teacher and he became superintendent. Their daughter, Jo Beth, who would marry, start teaching in Harrison and provide them with grand children, Amy and Terry McEntire, would later join them. Norma Jo and Terry again had pleasant and productive years in Harrison and each one retired in 1988 in the building where each started teaching in 1949.
Travel, pursuit of hobbies, research and writing family social history, and caring for grand children, and now a great grand child, Haley Marshall, have kept Norma Jo and Terry Humble productively busy and happy in retirement.
T. A. Humble, Thelma Goodner Humble, Roland Humble, Geraldine Humble Garrett, Terry Humble, Norma Jo Lawrence Humble, and Jo Beth Humble McEntire have all attended or graduated from the University of Central Arkansas.
