This Collection is comprised of the World War I correspondence of Ross Jefferson Smith, a resident of Carlisle, Lonoke County, Arkansas. Smith was born July 22, 1900, the son of John Smith and Rosie Jarvis Smith. He was one of five children
During the First World War, Smith served as a private in the Infantry, first at Camp Pike, Arkansas, then at Camp Bureaugard, Louisiana.
He was married to Evelyn Smith, who was born January 24, 1905, and died August 29, 1989. They had a son, John Ross Smith. Ross J. Smith died April 19, 1959, at the age of 58.
The letters are mostly written while Ross J. Smith was on active military duty during World War I. In the letter he frequently makes mention of his friend and fellow soldier, Sam Smith- who was apparently no relation.
