             It was 1976 when Cliff Fannin Baker, Director of the Arkansas Theatre of the Philharmonic, left his position to found the first professional theatre in the state of Arkansas.  He established the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, a non-profit corporation, with an initial board of four members and a grant of $12,000 from the Arkansas State Office of Arts and Humanities (Arkansas Arts Council).  Since then, the A.R.T. has grown into a professional arts organization reaching over 50,000 Arkansans annually with performances and workshops.

 

             The A.R.T. has received national recognition for the quality of its productions and its extensive outreach programs.  Through “Arts-In-Education” it reaches and performs statewide for thousands of school students.  “Project Culture” exposes prison inmates to theatre. And the “Geridrama” program takes theatre to nursing homes.  The A.R.T. stages several productions each year on its main stage and tours at least one of them to cities throughout the state.  A touring company also participates in the five state regional tours of the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

 

            The first home of the A.R.T. was the Hunter Memorial Methodist Church in Little Rock, which was occupied for several years on a lease-purchase agreement.  In 1979, the A.R.T. bought and then renovated the Building with assistance from the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.  By 1983, it became clear that a larger facility was needed and a search began for a new home.  The historic Galloway Building (formerly Dillard’s Home Center) in downtown Little Rock’s Main Street Market Mall was purchased and renovated.  The proceeds came from a $2.5 million fundraising campaign.  The A.R.T. moved to its new home in October 1988.  The facility tripled the seating capacity of the theatre and provided a permanent forum for the 1988 professional staff and company of 25 fulltime and 50 part-time employees.

 

            The A.R.T.’s goal from the beginning has been to promote, develop, and expand the quality of life in Arkansas through the performing arts.  It has won and retained support for its programs from state, regional, and national arts groups, individual patrons, corporations, and benevolent foundations.  A large board of directors currently governs the A.R.T. with assistance from a State Advisory Council and Friends of the Theatre Organization.  In 1989 its annual budget was about $900,000.

 

 Arrangement

  

            These records include correspondence, production (plays) materials, financial documents, and administrative and Board of Directors matters, and personnel files.  The collection is divided into two series:

 

1) Series I – Administrative Records

                     Sub-series I- Board / Management Materials, correspondence, articles, by-laws, minutes, reports, properties (including the Main Street Building), and associated organizations.

 

                     Sub-series II- Personnel records with individual employee files.

 

                     Sub-series III- Budge and finance, monthly and annual reports, budget, and financial statements, State and Federal income statements, audits, banking and investment matters, actors’ equity and insurance records, royalties, social security matters, payroll, fundraising by Friends of the Theatre, grants including national and Arkansas endowments for the humanities, individual / corporate membership and ticket matters, cash receipt ledgers, and computer generated printouts of the General Ledgers.

 

                     Sub-series IV- Publicity, general and specific publicity on the Arkansas Repertory Theatre activities personnel, and programs, and miscellaneous photographs.

 

                     Sub-series V- Consortium arts, articles of incorporation, annual reports, board reports, agendas, and minutes, correspondence, financial records, grant applications, and publications.

 

2) Series II– Productions and Programming

                     Sub-series I- Plays, season schedules and materials on individual plays produced.

 

                     Sub-series II- Outreach projects, records on “The Gifted Students” program, touring, guest performers, Arts-In-Education, and similar programs.
