CONWAY JUNIOR SHAKESPEARE CLUB RECORDS

M89-24

The collection consists of the records of the 63‑year‑old Conway Junior Shakespeare Club, including the constitution, minutes, and yearbooks.  It was donated to the UCA Archives by The Faulkner County Historical Society in September 1989.  A group of Conway women organized the Junior Shakespeare Club in 1926 with the objective of promoting the study of literature.  From that premise the club grew into a 35‑member woman's club active in the Conway community.  Meetings were held monthly and included a variety of programs.  Guest speakers talked about trips abroad; college professors lectured on literature, health, and other topics; historical, political, and programs on fashion, home decorating, and holidays were held.

The club was active in several community service projects, such as donating books to the library and sponsorship participants in Girl's State.  It disbanded in April 1989 when meeting attendance declined.
