This collection contains the
newsletters, correspondence, publications, news clippings, films, and reports
from the
Arkansas
Ecology Center. The organizations
purpose was to conduct environmental research and offer its findings to the
public. The majority of the papers deal
with the Cache River controversy and the rest of the collection consists of
papers from the organization itself.
The bulk of the papers are from the period of 1970 to 1981.
The Arkansas Ecology Center was
first known as the "Friends of Arkansas" and then later as the
"Environmental Information Center."
On May 1, 1970, the Arkansas Ecology Center became an official domestic
non-profit corporation.
The main purpose of the Center was
to conduct environmental research and provide information to the public. They
accomplished this goal by maintaining a library of books, newspaper clipping
files, and copies of environmentally relevant publication.
A seven-member board of directors
conducted the official business for the Center. The Center was funded by public donations and small grants. They became defunct by c. July 1981.
This collection is arranged in five
series including (1) Organization, (2) Finance, (3) Newsletters, (4) Cache
River, and (5) Oversized.
Series I - Organization. Listing of the Board of Directors, Board
minutes, By-Laws of the organization, correspondence, photographs
and projects.
Series II - Finance. Checking and saving account statements, Ford
Foundation Grant information, money receipts and tax withholding
forms.
Series III - Newsletters From
the period of 1970 to 1977.
Series IV - Cache River
Subseries I - General Correspondence,
economic studies, environmental statements, reports and testimonials.
