Hampton Roy Paper

M86-11

This collection contains the correspondence, papers, publications, writings, photographs, memorabilia, and family papers of Frederick Hampton Roy. Dr. Roy is a prominent Little Rock, Arkansas ophthalmologist, historic preservation advocate, founder of the World Eye Foundation, author of books on ophthalmology and history, philanthropist, and a 1986 candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Arkansas. These papers and other materials chronicle Dr. Roy's contributions to the medical profession, Arkansas history and historic preservation, his participation in politics and various organizations, his family and personal life, and his writings. The bulk of the papers date from 1955-Present.

Frederick Hampton Roy, Sr. was born in Nashville, Tennessee on June 27, 1937. He attended the University of Tennessee and in 1961 received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School. His residency was taken in ophthalmology at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine at Memphis, and he then received a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at the same institution. From 1967 to 1969 he served in the U.S. Army at Madigan General Hospital, Fort Lewis, Washington, being discharged as a major. From 1969 to 1974 Dr. Roy was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in Little Rock; since 1974 he has been an Associate Clinical Professor at that school.

In July 1974 Dr. Roy went into the private practice of ophthalmology, specializing in cataract surgery, a practice he still continues. He is highly regarded for his research and writing in the field of ophthalmology, having published over 70 articles, thirteen books, as well as pamphlets, filmstrips, and other educational materials. In addition, he was the leading force in the formation of the World Eye Foundation, a non-profit organization established to foster eye care in the Third World. He has traveled, taught, and lectured throughout the world, including India, China, Egypt, Bolivia, Argentina, and many other countries.

Among his interests outside medicine is history and historic preservation. He has restored several historic structures in Little Rock, including the Ada Thompson Home and the building where he currently lives, the Cornish House. He was a principal author of the biography of the prominent Arkansas architect Charles L. Thompson as well as the foremost history of Little Rock architecture, How We Lived: Little Rock as an American City (1984). He endowed the F. Hampton Roy History Award, an annual cash prize administered by the Pulaski County Historical Society, in 1980. In 1984 he won the Parker Westbrook Historic Preservation Award, sponsored by the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas.

Dr. Roy ran an unsuccessful campaign as a Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Arkansas in 1986. He was a prominent supporter of Paul Riviere, former Secretary of State, in his unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984.

In 1990 Dr. Roy made a second unsuccessful campaign for Lieutenant Governor, being defeated by Jim Guy Tucker. He then waged a successful race for the Little Rock Board of Directors. He considered a third try for Lieutenant Governor in the 1993 special election to fill the seat vacated by Jim Guy Tucker, but chose not to run.

Dr. Roy is married to Michelle Roy and he is the father of four children, three sons and a daughter. He was the adoptive father of the late Barry Lynn Roy, Charles "Chip" Turner Roy, and the step-father of Catherine Holland Wyatt, daughter of former wife Nancy Roy.
