M01-15
In the early morning hours of September 11, 2001, at 8:45 Eastern Standard Time, American Airlines flight 11 out of Boston Massachusetts broke from its routine flight plan and crashed into the North tower of the World Trade Center. The sight of this was horrifying as regular programming was interrupted to place live views onto the screen.
· 9:03 Eastern Standard Time, United Airlines flight 175 out of Boston Massachusetts deviated from its flight plan and crashed into the South tower of the World Trade Center sending a plume of smoke in the air and debris to the surface of the streets. For a second time, the Twin Towers were struck with a massive commercial passenger plane. With this collision it was quickly ascertained that this was an immediate threat against National Security and Terrorist must be responsible.
· 9:17 Eastern Standard Time, the Federal Aviation Administration closes the air space over New York City, and begins diverting air traffic to other hubs across the nation.
· 9:21 Eastern Standard Time, the New York Port Authority closes access to all bridges, tunnels, roads, rail-ways, ship-ports, and subways. This was necessary to help stop the flow of people in, and most importantly help control the wide spread panic and hysteria sweeping across New York. This also removed terrorist or would-be terrorist from vital escape routes through the city. Only fire and rescue vehicles gained access and were allowed to travel.
· 9:40 Eastern Standard Time, the FAA sets a precedent, for the first time ever all air travel is halted over the United States. At the time this action was taken, all airplanes were grounded leaving only 50 flights still in air. These flights were diverted to other international airports.
· 9:43 Eastern Standard Time, American Airlines flight 77 runs off course and slams into the upper echelon of the United States Military, the Pentagon.
· 9:45 Eastern Standard Time, the White House is evacuated. At the time, President George W. Bush Jr. was speaking at an Elementary school in the state of Florida.
· 9:57 Eastern Standard Time, President George W. Bush Jr. is notified about the World Trade Center and Pentagon attack. He promptly leaves Florida in Air Force One and begins evasive maneuvers and tactical patterns that are standard operational procedures during a National Crisis or concern of safety for the President and the integrity of the American Government.
· 10:05 Eastern Standard Time, the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses due to the stress and strain on the foundation structure. It was reported that more than likely the damage might have been magnified by the jet fuel burning. Because jet fuel burns at a much higher Fahrenheit, it literally melted the structure to the point of collapse. This may be contributed to the fact that the fires were fanned with an abundance of fuel. The aircraft had recently been re-fueled in Boston.
· 10:08 the Secret Service was noticeably visible on scenes in Washington D.C. and New York City. These Secret Service men were carrying Automatic Rifles and other Militaristic weapons. Many were dispatched to watch and guard Memorial structures.
· 10:10 Eastern Standard Time, United Airlines flight 93 crashes into Pennsylvania. During this crisis a portion of the Pentagon collapses at the exact same time.
· 10:13 Eastern Standard Time, the United Nations evacuates.
· 10:28 Eastern Standard Time, the North Tower, which was the first tower attacked, collapses and mixes with the already collapsed South tower causing massive death and destruction to fireman, rescue workers, police and other agencies on the scene.
· 10:45 Eastern Standard Time, All Federal buildings are evacuated due to safety protocol.
· 10:46 Eastern Standard Time, Colon Powell, Secretary of State, is informed of the attack and cuts his trip to Latin America short. He returns back to the United States, where tactical procedures are taken to ensure his safety.
· 10:48 Eastern Standard Time, the commercial airliner that crashed in Pennsylvania is confirmed by the Airline and Government officials.
· 11:18 Eastern Standard Time, United Airlines and American Airlines report that they had lost the planes from radar earlier that morning. The magnitude of this report shows the American citizens that guidelines and changes must be made to the aviation industries policies and procedures. At this time, they also report that there may still be even more planes unaccounted for.
· 12:15 Eastern Standard Time, the major borders between the countries of Canada and Mexico are closed and put on a precedent setting highest alert ever in American History.
· 1:04 Eastern Standard Time, the entire nation of America is put on the Highest Alert possible. These actions began to trickle down and effect the everyday small community lifestyle. Police Departments are placed on alerts. The Fire and Rescue divisions are placed on alert. Emergency management meetings are in progress. Economic issues of fuel supplies and costs are being perpetuated through small communities. Every one begins to feel the threat of panic. Children are watching the reactions of adults and begin formulating thoughts of their own. Society begins to understand how we take advantage of peace, prosperity, and security of the nation. Military members all over the world are placed on high alert as embassy’s barricade and lock themselves behind closed walls. Other nations begin watching the devastation taking place in America and wonder about their own security measures. Throughout the day the nation as a whole is grief stricken, shocked, dismayed and angry at what happened. Newspapers begin running special editions, and second editions while television cameras are placed around ground zero, the White House, the Pentagon, the New York Stock Exchange, as state governments begin squirming desperately to understand how this is going to effect their local governments.
· 8:30 Eastern Standard Time, President George W. Bush Jr. addresses the Nation. This speech is designed to inform the nation of the events which have taken place, empathize with citizens who are missing loved ones, to ensure the American people that the integrity of the United States Government is intact and that that Security of the Nation will not be compromised. From this day forward President George W. Bush Jr. changes the direction of his administration and proclaims the “War on Terrorism” campaign. President George W. Bush Jr. who set the precedent for having the lowest approval rating ever is catapulted to heroic integrity and the highest approval rating of any American President.
Collection Process
This collection was produced through the special efforts and guidance of Jimmy Bryant, Director of UCA Archives & Special Collections, Assistant Archivist, David Bowie, and staff assistant, Betty Osborn; student workers, Sarah Langford, Artency Davis, Michelle Strouse, Cody Johnson and Cindy Frase.
Utilizing various media types, the University of Central Arkansas Archives has managed to produce a comprehensive and valuable collection. This collection includes such media types as County Newspapers, State Newspapers and National Newspapers spanning the coastlines of America. Articles produced and circulated at ground zero, and with the rising age of the Internet as a news media type, factual information was ascertained for future researchers.
Personal accounts were taken into consideration and added to the collection. Several of these accounts are from eyewitnesses of the collapse of the World Trade Center, Rescuer accounts and those who traveled the distance to New York to help in anyway possible. These accounts are testimonials as to the mood of the nation, before, during, and after the attack on American Soil. Various schools in small local communities were asked to write their reactions to the devastating tragedies, which unfolded on September 11, 2001. These writings contain information that may be ascertained as to the effect on home life, community, nationality, ethnicity, religious beliefs, common practices, educational changes, national security, homeland defense, and just their preferences to changes for the future and what they may expect. Many of these accounts come from Universities, High Schools, Jr. Highs, Elementary Schools, and Professionals in the community. Keeping all of these factors in mind, future researchers may be able to obtain valuable information as to how this event was perceived through the various stages of age and education. Questions such as; “Were the views more so that of the individual or did they adopt or conform to views other than their own?” Views such as family life, religious teachings, educational based, etc…
Information was also collected on the person who was publicly name responsible, instigated and planned this attack; Osama Bin Laden. Although there was very little information known, steps have been taken to insure that the information that was collected is factual, accurate and reflects society at the time collected.
